라디오를 듣다가 어떤 사람들을 가리켜 “자신들에게는 율법 a law into themselves.”이라고 하는 것을 보았습니다. 하지만 제 기억에 있는 격언은 “a law unto themselves.”였습니다.
이 표현은 로마서 2장 14절에서 왔습니다. 많은 영문 번역들이 “a law unto themselves”라고 쓰고 있지만, 사실 to나 for 같은 다른 전치사를 사용하는 번역본도 있습니다. 다음은 세 가지 버전의 번역입니다.
For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves.

Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law.
- New International Version (NIV).
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.

이 문단은 유대인들에게 주어진 것과 같은 율법은 가지고 있지 않으나 바른 일을 하도록 스스로 지켜야 할 나름의 규칙을 배운 이방인들에 대한 이야기입니다.
unto라는 전치사는 거의 골동품입니다. 한때는 현대와 같은 into를 비롯해서 여러가지 의미를 가지고 있었지만 18세기에 이르러 점차 쇠퇴하다가 “to be a law unto oneself.”와 같은 격언 외에 일반적으로는 사용되지 않게 되었습니다.
Note: to라는 뜻의 unto는 간혹 종교적으로 신성함을 나타내기 위해 “We cry unto the Lord.”와 같이 사용됩니다.
“a law unto themselves”의 현대적 의미는 애초 성경에서의 용법과 다릅니다. 성경에서는
이방인을 다른 법에 복종하는 것으로 구분하는데, 다른 법이라 하더라도 해당 무리 전체에 적용이 될 것입니다.
“to be a law unto oneself”라는 말은 현대적으로는 다른 모든 사람들에게 적용되는 법을, 마치 자기들이 법 위에 있는 양 재미로 무시하는 사람들을 가리킵다. 다음은 인터넷 상의 몇가지 예입니다.

Note: 법학 교수들의 말을 따온 부분은 엄밀히 말해 뉴스 기사 중에서 발췌한 것입니다. untoㅍ대용으로 into를 사용한 것은 아마 리포터나 편집부의 잘못으로 보입니다.
말을 할 때 낡아 보이는 unto를 사용하지 않으려면 그냥 to를 사용하면 됩니다.
